For the past four years, I’ve been on a journey to become what I proudly call the best homemaker in all the land. This journey has been deeply fulfilling — not because homemaking is easy, but because it’s an incredible honor to create a space where my family and I can thrive.
Why I Love Being a Homemaker
I take immense pride in being the keeper of my home. This role isn’t about chores or tasks — it’s about creating meaningful experiences. When I think about homemaking, I imagine warm pillows fresh from the dryer when someone’s feeling sick. I think about laughter at the dinner table, the smell of a freshly bathed baby, and the comfort of knowing my family feels safe and nurtured.
As a Black homemaker, this role feels even more significant. I’m intentional about creating a home that reflects our culture, values, and joy. From the music I play while cooking to the traditions I’m passing down, I see homemaking as a way to honor my family’s legacy while building something beautiful for the future.
Homemaking Is a Skill — Not a Talent
For years, I believed that being a great homemaker was something you were either born to do or not. But I’ve learned that homemaking is a skill — one that can be practiced and improved. There’s a process involved in creating an amazing home, and anyone willing to learn can master it.
The Three Key Elements of Homemaking
I break homemaking into three important parts:
- The Process – Homemaking takes time and intentionality. It’s not something that happens overnight.
- The Amazing Place – Your home can be anything you want it to be. Why not make it amazing?
- Family and Self – A well-kept home nurtures everyone in it — including you.
Why I See Homemaking as a Promotion
Some people view becoming a homemaker as a step down from a professional career, but I see it as a promotion. I’ve spent years gaining skills in leadership, communication, and strategy, and now I get to use all of that to create an extraordinary home for my family.
As a Black homemaker, I also see this role as a powerful way to reclaim joy, peace, and rest in my home. For generations, Black women have been expected to nurture others while neglecting themselves. But I believe creating an amazing home should feel abundant — not exhausting.
Homemaking reminds me of Disney’s incredible vision. Disney is known as the happiest place on Earth, and they achieved that by deciding what they wanted to create. I see my role as a homemaker in the same way — I get to design a space that feels magical, safe, and joyful.
You Can Create the Most Amazing Place in All the Land
Whether you’re single, married, parenting, or caring for yourself, you have the power to create an amazing home. It’s not about perfection — it’s about intentionally making your space one where you can thrive.
If you’ve ever felt like homemaking isn’t for you, I encourage you to reconsider. It’s not about doing it all at once — it’s about embracing the process, finding joy in small moments, and deciding to make your home an incredible place to be.
